It seems a most divisive time and maybe some open discussion will make a difference.

This is a list of questions available to ask Maui County and State candidates for office.

1.          Do you support going ahead with Wailea 670 and Makena Resort projects, especially as they relate to lack of water and infrastructure?

2.       Considering we are in a water cutback situation and our infrastructure is sadly behind where it needs to be, how should we handle future development?

3.       Would you support the creating of a County position of “Coordinator of Organic and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Production”?

4.       Would you support controls on future landscaping in South Maui to require xeriscaping and low water use foliage instead of turning the desert into the tropical jungle?

5.       How do you feel we can best reach our renewable energy goals in a realistic manner?

6.       How high a priority is ‘Food and Energy Security and Independence’ to you as it relates to our distance from the rest of the world?

7.       How would you work to end preferential treatment and entrenched ways of doing business that favor large corporations over smaller and local businesses? Or would you?

8.       What is your position on Genetically Modified Organisms in our food supply?

9.       What can we do to create more decisive action at the government level at a time when doing the same old thing appears to be getting us into a hole that will be harder to dig out of the longer we do little about very important issues?

10.   How will you work to have monies generated in Hawaii (or Maui County) stay local for several more cycles before leaving for large offshore corporations?

11.   What is your position on Transient Vacation Rentals, especially on the North Shore, but island wide as well?

12.   What is your position on new regulations for the wedding industry?

13.   Would you be willing to work with the County to find land for a South Maui Community Garden at/near the site of the new park or along the unused North/South Collector Rd Corridor and to find the money and work with the Wastewater Reclamation Division to add the required UV filters to their South Maui plant so the R1 water would then be clean enough to meet Health Dept requirements for growing food?

14.   Would you ever consider using HECO/MECO provided interns in your office?

15.   How do you propose dealing with increasing demands on Kahului Harbor given that over 90% of our goods come in through that harbor and it also supports many other uses?

16.   What is your position on preserving beach access, cultural activities, canoe paddling and surf breaks in the face of growth and other demands on harbors and shorelines?

17.   What is your position on new hospitals for Maui County?

18.   What is your position on the need for improving healthcare throughout the County?

19.   What role should prevention and lifestyle (diet, quality of life, etc) play in healthcare?

20.   What would you do to create truly affordable housing? Can anything be done?

21.   What is your position on preparing for a day when ships can’t get here with everything we need? Supporting local agriculture? Renewable energy? Conservation?
